00:01 – 00:28
Hello, everyone. Welcome back. I’m so excited to be here with you this week on the It’s Your Offer podcast to talk about a topic that is near and dear to my heart. It’s the topic of optimization. You hear that a lot on this podcast if you’ve hung around here for a little while and you’ve listened to some of these episodes. We talk a lot about optimizing your business. We talk about the idea of maximizing your profits. We talk a lot about return on investment, of ways that you can really leverage your time, your energy, and your money.
Jessica Miller
00:29 – 00:58
to get a lot more on the back end than what you put in on the front end. I want to dig in today about why this is so important and what you need to understand about your business in order to run a business that is optimized, in order to be able to leverage the inputs in your business to get a lot on the back end and to create assets that become repeatable, meaning that you can run them over and over and not just make more money and more impact in the short term, but make it in the long term and forever.
Jessica Miller
00:59 – 01:32
This is something that a lot of people talk about, and I have to tell you that many of the conversations that I’ve had don’t really get down to the brass tacks of what this really means for you and how this makes your life better, how this makes your business more powerful, and frankly, how it is the golden ticket to you having a lot more fun in your day-to-day life and your day-to-day business. So today I’m going to dig into what exactly is optimization? Why should every single one of you buy into this right now? And I am coming in hot with a very sort of direct to the point and streamlined episode.
Jessica Miller
01:33 – 02:30
So, you can take all this information and go to your business right now. and make sure that you dig in and understand these levers in your business that create a tremendous amount of profit for you, free time, freedom, and a lot of results for your clients on the backend. Okay, so starting with this concept of optimization. Why is this important? What does it mean when you optimize something? Why should you be doing this all the time? Well, this starts from a very basic and foundational principle that quality in your business matters, that it matters to you to do things better, to do them really well, to really maximize your inputs to create bigger outputs on the back end, that you’re looking through the lens of your business from the perspective of where can you tighten up and enhance different parts of your business to create a more powerful result.
Jessica Miller
02:31 – 03:18
What this also means is that you buy into this idea that not everything is created equal. And here’s the great news, not everything is created equal. Here’s the bad news, not everything is created equal. And a lot of times before we really think about this concept and we really buy into this idea of optimizing and looking at things from the perspective of power and what they can create on the back end, we are doing a lot of things that frankly don’t really move the lever in our business. We’re working hard and our heart and soul is in it, but we are treating everything the same and therefore we are wasting a lot of time doing things that actually don’t have a major impact on the results that we want to create.
Jessica Miller
03:19 – 04:12
So, when we think about optimizing and we’re looking through this lever of, or this lens of quality, and we’re looking at the levers in our business, not as all of them being created equal, but we’re looking specifically for the things that are going to create bigger outputs on the back end, we start to get really specific about what is going on in our business and what things create more of what we want and less of what we don’t want. And when we start to think about our business through that lens, we are able to get really critical of what is happening in that business, what things are connected to what other things, and how do those things not only work in harmony with each other, but where can we streamline them and make them the most efficient so that we create something that is very focused and very powerful and creates more and more results the way that we want them.
Jessica Miller
04:14 – 04:52
So, when we think about doing it better, optimizing something, what does that really mean and why is it something that you should think about in your business? Well, when you do something better, you create bigger and more powerful results. When you do that consistently, you create more value in the marketplace. When you create more value, you attract higher ticket clients. And what I mean by higher ticket is meaning that they are more ideal, not necessarily higher ticket, meaning they’re going to buy a higher ticket offer. But that could also be true. And over time, these are the people that will stay with you, keep working with you.
Jessica Miller
04:52 – 05:27
So over time, that long term value of a client like that actually is bigger. So, when you think of them as higher ticket from that perspective, they usually are spending more money with you over time. But what I mean is they’re higher quality. They are your ideal clients. They’re the people that love what you have to offer. They want to keep buying from you and they are your perfect fit clients. So, when you create value and you attract clients like that, these people are more willing to buy more. They are poised to buy and they are going to stay with you longer and create more value in your business.
Jessica Miller
05:29 – 06:10
So why does that matter? Well, it matters because that repeat cash flow is gold. For any business, cash is king. And when we have more people that we can attract and that we can keep, and we understand what that person looks like and the phenotype of that person, we can more consistently invite them in, we can keep them, and we can keep that person coming more consistently. So, we have more predictability in our business, in the type of people we’re attracting and the amount of money that they’re going to spend with us. When we also optimize and we do things better, we create more ROI.
Jessica Miller
06:10 – 06:43
That means we start to get more efficient; we start to understand how these things are moving together, and we understand how to leverage these different pieces of our business in a more powerful way so that we can create a bigger result on the back end with less effort on the front. When you start to run a business like this, what ends up happening is you know exactly who your clients are, you know how to attract and retain them specifically, they stay with you longer, they are a higher quality client, and it takes less effort to actually not only bring them into your business, but to keep them there and keep them happy.
Jessica Miller
06:44 – 07:21
And because of that, you are able to run a more powerful and thriving business with a lot of ease. Doesn’t that sound amazing? The only way that you can do that is by understanding the pieces of your business in context with this ideal client and connected to the results that you want to create, both for you and your business and for your clients, and making sure all of those pieces are working together in harmony. When you optimize around that, you are unstoppable because all of these important pieces of your business are working in tandem and they are feeding off of each other.
Jessica Miller
07:21 – 07:58
So, they are creating this momentum and this output that is more than just adding every piece together. It becomes exponential and it feeds on itself and it feeds back like all the way into the beginning. It creates that flywheel effect. And this is what you want in your business. Because when you can run a business like that, it is easy, it is predictable, it is thriving, and you know exactly what you need to do to keep it moving. Now, in order to run a business like that, there are parts of your company that you need to understand intimately.
Jessica Miller
07:58 – 08:37
This is true if you are just starting out, maybe making your first six figures, and it is true if you are a multiple six figure or seven figure earner. And I will tell you that I have worked with businesses across the gamut, and there are people in every single one of these buckets that I just mentioned that do not have a handle on these four things that I’m going to share with you. And because of that, they might be making money. They might be bringing clients in. They might have a business that is running, but I promise you they are leaving a ton of money on the table and they are burning through a bunch of energy.
Jessica Miller
08:37 – 09:12
that they don’t need to be doing. And it is because they don’t have clarity around the four things that I’m going to share with you that are essential for you to understand if you buy into this idea of quality, value, optimization, and high ROI. And I am gonna tell you it is the ticket to freedom because your business and the pieces of it are powerful assets. And when you learn to optimize them, your whole business becomes optimized and everything is easier. Here are the four things that you need to know. And I want you to write these down.
Jessica Miller
09:13 – 09:48
And after this episode, I want you to go and I want you to look at your business through the lens of these four levers. These are really the most powerful profit levers in your business. And when you optimize them, you create so much more by doing less. And it is fabulous. So, here’s what these things are. The first and most powerful profit lever you will ever have in your business is your offers. You need to understand your offers intimately. You need to understand which ones are the most powerful. You need to understand which ones are the ones that are most profitable.
Jessica Miller
09:49 – 10:25
You need to understand how they fit together within the ecosystem of your business. What is your offer stack? What are people consuming? What are they consuming most of? What are they consuming after they consume one of those things or another? How do those offers function in your business? You need to understand them. like they were your children. If you are a parent, you understand what I’m saying. Or they are a family member, or they are like your group of best friends. You need to understand them intimately. What is the nuances of those offers? How are they interacting with each other?
Jessica Miller
10:25 – 11:07
How are they serving you? How are you interacting with them? Which ones do you like? Which ones are selling the best? Which one do your clients always talk to you about? What are other people telling their friends about you and mentioning your offers? Which ones are they sharing with others? When you understand your offers intimately, you will understand what is actually driving your business. Again, like I said in the beginning, not all of the pieces of your business are created equal. Not all of your offers are created equal. And not that I’m about to play favorites, but it is important that you intimately understand how those offers are performing in your business.
Jessica Miller
11:08 – 11:39
The more you understand them, the more you will be able to optimize them. Some of them are going to go by the wayside, meaning maybe you’re going to let some of those go. Maybe they’re not performing in the best way that you want them to. Maybe you don’t love them. Maybe there’s some that you really love, but they’re not performing the best. Maybe those are some that you take a longer look at because you love them, you love delivering them, but there’s something about it that’s just not working. Either way, you need to understand your offers.
Jessica Miller
11:40 – 12:18
And that is the first piece and the most powerful lever in your business that you can ever look at and optimize. Because at the end of the day, if you are not selling offers, products, services, you are not making money. You are not in business. You cannot survive without powerful offers. And let me tell you that if you have offers that sell themselves, if they are hell yes, if they are binge worthy, everything else in your business is easier. So, the first place you want to look is at your offers, intimately understanding your offers. The second place that you want to really look at is at your numbers, meaning your finances.
Jessica Miller
12:19 – 13:00
Do you understand your money? Do you understand your cashflow? Do you understand your expenses? Do you understand your accounts receivable? Do you understand all of these pieces of your finances intimately? I will tell you if the answer is no, and for many, many, many people, the answer is no. They understand if they’re in the black or the red, especially if you’re a business who’s making money, you have a sense of like, are we like sinking or swimming? But you do not understand how those numbers are actually working. You don’t understand how they move together to help you run your business in a powerful and efficient way.
Jessica Miller
13:01 – 13:35
Many times, we also don’t understand whether or not our numbers are actually working correctly to actually get us where we want to go. You know, we started this business for a reason. We want to have a certain lifestyle. We want our day to day to be a certain way. And our numbers tell that story. We need to understand the money. And not just from the perspective of having clarity around that because you absolutely do and you want to intimately understand how that money is moving through your business, but you also want to understand it from the perspective of how is it working for you?
Jessica Miller
13:36 – 14:19
How can you optimize the way your money is working in your business to actually work for you and not be something that’s holding you back? Many, many times people will be going through the motions in their business. And I will tell you, those of us who are not kind of living on the edge, we’re not living paycheck to paycheck, we are the worst offenders. Money is coming in and moving out in a way that is not clear, we don’t have control over it, and we’re not choosing it intentionally. And therefore, it is not optimized. And it is a very powerful asset in our business that we are missing the opportunity to have it really work for us.
Jessica Miller
14:19 – 15:05
That includes being exposed from a tax perspective, right? All of those things that happen on the back end with, you know, how we’re categorizing things and how our business is set up and all of those pieces, they all fall into this category and they’re all part of how we optimize and understand our money. The second place and a powerful lever in your business is your money and you need to understand it. The third place, and this is sort of connected to money but it is a different thing, is understanding your data. Understanding your data. I cannot tell you how many people on a daily basis I talk to that have no understanding of the data in their business.
Jessica Miller
15:05 – 15:45
They can’t go and look at their funnels. They can’t go and look at their assets. They cannot look across that customer journey and understand what is happening in their business for reals, as I tell my clients, like for real, what is happening in your business by looking at the numbers and the data and the analytics that are connected to your business. Now, like money and finances in our business, when it comes to numbers and data, it is like a dirty word. I would say money, finances, and data numbers are the two number one places where people are hiding.
Jessica Miller
15:46 – 16:21
They ignore it. It’s like a dirty word. They are afraid to talk about it. They think if they talk to somebody, they are going to be judged around it. They feel like they’re going to be told they’re doing something wrong. All of these things are limiting beliefs that are limiting you in optimizing your business. Both your money and your data will set you free. If you understand how those numbers, like the brass tacks of those things, are a blueprint of not only what’s going on in your business, but the opportunities that you have on the back end, it would blow your mind.
Jessica Miller
16:22 – 17:01
So, understanding your numbers, meaning your data, is so crucial. And here’s what I mean by this. I don’t mean some elaborate, complicated Google Analytics dashboard. Although some of you are running a business that is very complex and may need some of that, but putting that aside, even if you are a business that needs that, and there are very few of you, I am talking about the basic data, basic data of where are my people coming from and how many people are landing on my landing pages, how many people are landing on my website, how many people are consuming a certain asset in my business.
Jessica Miller
17:01 – 17:32
It could be a lead magnet, it could be your offer, it could be any sort of thing that you put out there, your podcast. Who is consuming that? How many people are doing that? What are those key conversion points in your customer journey or in your funnel that you need to understand? Meaning you’re getting on sales calls however many times a week. How many of those people are becoming buying customers? What is that equation? And it’s a simple math, like I’m on 20 sales calls, 10 people signed up for my offer. It’s a conversion rate of 50%.
Jessica Miller
17:33 – 18:17
We’re talking basic, basic numbers. These things are so simple on some level, but they are so scary to many people and most of you don’t understand it. It is simple and it is something you have to get your arms around. When you do this, it will set you free because it will show you exactly what is going on in your business, exactly what is working, and exactly what is not working up to your liking so you can optimize it. So, your data is really important. So, knowing your data and looking at it, and asking yourself a simple question right now of, do I look at my data?
Jessica Miller
18:17 – 18:52
Do I know where my data is? Am I using this data in a simple fashion in my daily world, in my daily business? Sort of rewinding to the offers and the money, a simple question around your offers is like, do you know it’s working? Do you know where your money is coming from? Meaning what is selling in your business right now? Where is the lion’s share of your money coming from? What offers are working really well? And how do you feel about them? Do you love them? Do you hate them? What is going on with those offers?
Jessica Miller
18:52 – 19:25
That’s the first question you’re going to ask about your offers. And for the money is, do you look at your books on a consistent basis? Meaning, are you looking at your expenses? Are you reconciling? Are you doing those things every week, once a month, never? Like, can you look yourself in the mirror with a red face test and say, I have a good sense and control over my money? If the answer is no, it’s time to start wading into that water. Start with a bookkeeper or get into your QuickBooks and rip off the Band-Aid and take a look.
Jessica Miller
19:26 – 19:57
But fast forwarding to the data, do you understand your data? Are there those key points in your customer journey where you can say, I understand what’s going on here and I have a sense of how these assets are working so I can see what these powerful assets are in my business? That’s what you need to ask around your data. And last but not least, is do you understand your audience? Do you understand your people? And what I mean by that is this. Do you have clarity around who your ideal customer is? We don’t want all the customers in the world.
Jessica Miller
19:57 – 20:31
We want you to know who is the person I am crazy about. Who is my ideal customer that I really want to work with? Do I understand them? Again, intimately, do I understand them? That includes, do I understand where they’re coming from? Do I understand what they’re interacting with in my business? Where are they coming in? What are they consuming? How many of them are there? Like, do I have an audience of five people on social media and 10 people on my email list? You know, where am I hanging out and how many people are there?
Jessica Miller
20:31 – 21:21
How big is this audience? Do I have a sense of my reach and my visibility? We don’t want to spend all day long chasing clients and money, like running after cold traffic all the time, but you need an audience. You need to understand who you’re speaking to. You need to understand who those ideal people are intimately so that you can make sure that your business is tailored to them, not to everybody, to your favorite people. So, walking back and recapping this, here are the four areas that you want to really understand in your business in order to optimize your business to be a powerful, powerful machine, really to work for you, to work easily, to be fun, to be something that you feel like you have control over and that is efficient.
Jessica Miller
21:21 – 21:56
And the more that you do that, the more freedom you have. It frees up so much mental space. It allows you to do things quicker, better, with more of an understanding of how you can repeatedly create the result you want. So, what are these four places? Number one, it’s around your offers. Do you understand your offers intimately? Do you understand who is buying what? What is actually working? What is the offer everyone talks about? Who is telling other people about what offer? All of those things related to your offers in your business are really important.
Jessica Miller
21:57 – 22:29
You have nothing if you don’t have great offers. People are coming and buying those things from you. You want to understand them really intimately so that you can make them powerful and strong and optimized. The second place is understanding your finances and your money. Money, cash is the lifeblood of your business. If you’re not making a lot of it, you’re struggling. And if you’re struggling, it’s no fun to be in business. So, understanding your money, not just from the perspective of like, are we in the red and tanking? But how can this money work for me?
Jessica Miller
22:30 – 22:58
What is it doing in my business? How is it moving? Like understanding those pieces so that you feel like you are in control of your money and in control of your business and it’s not just something that’s happening to you. You’re not avoiding it. You’re not ignoring it. Money is not a dirty word. You should make as much of it as you want. And you should be so excited to actually have a lot of it and to impact people in a positive way because you make a lot of money when you’re providing a lot of value in the marketplace.
Jessica Miller
22:58 – 23:36
And that means you’re helping a lot of people. So, understanding your money intimately, not being afraid of it, embracing it, and really understanding that it is a powerful profit lever in your business. The third place is around your data, the brass tacks of the analytics of what is going on in your business. Not a complicated, crazy Google Analytics dashboard. I am talking about the basic pieces of data that connect to your client journey and your funnel. You know, understanding how these different assets along that client journey are working. How are your landing pages performing? Who is clicking on the things that you need them to click on?
Jessica Miller
23:36 – 24:05
How are your emails performing if you’re sending emails? If you’re posting on social media, how are those posts doing? What is the data that is going to show you exactly what is going on in your business? so that you can not only get a sense of what is really happening, meaning it is the real data, you cannot argue with the numbers, but you also can see the opportunities and the next best place for you to optimize your business through your data. And last but not least is do you understand your audience? Do you understand your ideal client?
Jessica Miller
24:06 – 24:49
Do you know how these people think, what they’re looking for, where they’re hanging out, where most of the people that are buying your stuff or coming into your business are coming from? Do you understand them intimately? In order to optimize the experience for those people and optimize your business to meet that specific client that is ideal for you, you need to understand them. And you need to understand them as a very powerful lever in your business. In a world that is crowded, crowded, crowded with information, with AI, with all the things, when you dial up intimacy and you understand your ideal client, you can create so many powerful relationships and loyalty with those people.
Jessica Miller
24:50 – 25:41
And your clients are a huge asset. Your people in your audience are a huge asset. The more that you optimize your business around that, you get people to come in, stay with you, buy more. It is a beautiful love affair and it just makes everything better. So, when we think about optimization, we think about doing things better. We are talking about doing things with higher quality, with more repeatability, more consistency, more quality, more value. It’s just a better product and a more powerful product all around because things are more focused. And when you get more focused and you allow your business to move in harmony with all of the pieces and you understand the most powerful pieces, you understand where those levers are, you can actually create so much more with less.
Jessica Miller
25:42 – 26:41
And for me personally, this is my mission in life. This is my mission for all of you. It is to help all of us. really get clear on the things that matter in our businesses, the things that really create powerful results. Because we are not here to be chained to our business. We are not here to follow every shiny object and add a bunch of complexity and run around all day like chasing clients and money. That’s not what we’re here for. you have a powerful asset. There are so many things already in your business that when you understand how to make them work well, not only together, but in isolation, you really figure out how to create something that is so much more powerful and so much of higher value to people than just doing a bunch of things all day, mediocre, because our culture tells us more equals more and hustle is better and you got to be busy.
Jessica Miller
26:42 – 27:13
Well, I’m here to like bust through all of that. And that is why this concept and understanding these pieces of your business is so important. And it does require you to kind of put this hat on where you’re buying into this philosophy. If you’re somebody who wants to run around all day and do all the things and burn up all your time and chase every shiny object, you can just like delete this episode because it’s not for you. But I think most of you that are here in this corner of the internet, you actually, under the surface, this is resonating because it is part of who you are.
Jessica Miller
27:13 – 27:47
And it is going to free up time and energy and mental space for you to do the next amazing thing in your business because you’re not running around in all the minutia trying to do all the things that at the end of the day don’t get you any closer to what you want. So go into your business and look at these four things. Offers, your money and finances, your data, and your audience. And look at it through the lens of optimizing. Do I intimately know these four parts of my business? And if you don’t, it is time to get intimately familiar with them.
Jessica Miller
27:47 – 28:18
What is one thing that you can do right now to get clarity around your offers and what is working in your business? What is one thing you can do around your money? Can you just go into your QuickBooks or can you ask your bookkeeper for a report? What is one thing you could do for your data? Can you go and look at your landing page or your website or your offers, your sales page to see how it’s performing, to see what people are really doing there? Ask the question, who’s going there and who is taking the action that I want them to take?
Jessica Miller
28:18 – 28:44
Who’s landing on that sales page? Who is clicking that button to buy and who is actually buying? That is a great place to start. And then as far as your audience, like where are your people coming from? Where are they coming from? What’s the number one place they are coming from and what are they consuming when they get into your business? Those are great places to start. I can’t wait to hear your success story. You got this. You are built to optimize. I know you can do it. Until next week, everyone, have an awesome week.
