Jessica Miller (00:01.134)
Hello everyone and welcome back to the It’s Your Offer podcast. I’m Jess Miller. I’m so excited to be here to talk to you today on this awesome episode about something that I’ve been really noticing recently. It’s been an interesting shift both in my own business and in conversations I’ve had with my clients. Some of my friends and colleagues have also mentioned this and it’s the beginning of the year there’s this vibe. I think people tend to sort of shift in the beginning of the year, just kind of how things go.
But more and more people are really, I think, choosing to focus. They’re leaning in to simplifying. They’re doing work where they’re already doing it better, and they’re choosing more joy and more ease. And at the same time, they’re being called to their intuition. They’re thinking through and trusting themselves more. They’re leaning into that as an asset in their business.
where they’re looking to really like slow down and protect their energy without losing momentum or sacrificing their results. Most people in my world are, they’re overachievers, they’re successful people, and they’re people who like to produce things and do things. But they are going inward, they’re listening to that energetic part of themselves and their intuition. And so today I wanna talk about something that I believe is becoming one of the most important growth strategies that you have.
And that is around your energy. And what I mean by this is I believe that how you work matters more than how much you work. And when I talk about energy, I don’t mean like your mood or your motivation. I mean your energetic capacity, your ability to actually do the things that you want to be doing based on your energy. Because
Your energy, what I mean by this is that your energy is the thing behind how clearly you think, how well you make decisions, the roles you play, what you notice, the vibes that you pick up, and also what you actually miss. And businesses don’t grow because someone worked just this arbitrary number of more hours. They grow because you make better decisions when you give yourself space and you have the energy for that.
Jessica Miller (02:20.94)
Now, side note, I’m not suggesting that if you do more, you’re not going to create more. But when you think about this from an energetic perspective, it’s actually really inefficient to just do more work, work harder, put more hours into something versus deciding where you want to focus and where you’re going to put your energy and your intention as it relates to your business. Because
Energy determines the quality of the decisions that you make and when you’re just making decisions in this arbitrary way, you’re actually having a much lower ROI than if you do it in a more discerning way. So, for a long time the model was very simple, right? You work harder, you put in more time, you stay busy, you make more and you create more. But at some point, the model really does break down.
More hours don’t automatically lead to more money. They don’t lead to the results that you want. They don’t lead to the outcomes or the life that you want, especially when those hours are filled with a very reactionary, urgent sort of pressure filled energy. We’re not making our best decisions from that place. Our brain isn’t working in this way very well. The new model that I’m talking about, this energetic model, like I joke on a lot of my podcasts, like it’s like the new black.
It is like the thing that we are all striving to do when we put it on, it feels really good. This new model looks very different. It looks like making fewer decisions, putting your energy in very specific places and not just specific places or any places. It’s better ones. It’s creating better outcomes. You have more space to think. You have more space to, you know, lean into what you want. There’s also more…
restraint and there’s more precision and it’s really about I joke with people that it’s like it’s a scalpel approach because you are intentionally putting things and maneuvering things in your business that are going to make the biggest impact toward what you want to be creating toward the results you want and what that might look like in this sort of like hustle culture versus like energy led culture or really like hustle strategy versus energy led strategy
Jessica Miller (04:45.196)
is that in the old model, was about more, like more, more, more, more hours, more constantly doing, filling your calendar, reacting all day long, getting to the end of the day and feeling like you’re just completely depleted. It was this idea of a volume game and putting that volume out and it was a volume strategy, more offers, more clients equal more success, like all of those things that are focused on volume.
where they’re not very specific, they’re not very discerning, they’re just about more, they’re about adding things. In this new model, it’s really about simplicity, it’s about fewer things, it’s about less but more high-quality decisions, right? It’s about space to think, it’s about strategic restraint, like what are you gonna say no to and what are you gonna say yes to? It’s about acting from a place where you are clear, you can see it.
You are slowing down and looking with that discerning eye to figure out what to do next. What is your best decision? And you’re not operating from this place of urgency and pressure, so you can do things really, really well. One thing that I have learned is this. You cannot outwork a lack of clarity. If you don’t know where you’re going, if you haven’t gotten down to the nuance and the details,
to know what is going to get you there best so that you can put your energy into this in a very specific way, you will not be able to outwork that because you will just be shooting in the dark and you’ll be doing a lot of work toward a lot of things, but the lack of where you wanna go and knowing specifically what you wanna create is always gonna lead to subpar results. So, when we think about clarity and we think about knowing what we want, what is our next best step?
What are the few things that we need to do to get there? That kind of specificity and that kind of clear thinking will outperform effort and volume every single time because in random volume, there’s just a lot of waste. And that is the old way of doing things. We’re now more sophisticated. Technology is more sophisticated. We have more information that we can then distill to actually make good choices. And now we are in this place where we look at our business through the lens of
Jessica Miller (07:10.252)
where do I wanna go and what do I wanna do? And now that I have these assets in front of me, which one of these things would actually make my life easier? I’m gonna give you an example of what I mean by this. I had a client who runs a business, it’s a brick-and-mortar business, and they have tons of different items in it. You can imagine, right? Like most brick-and-mortar businesses.
And when we looked in her shop and we looked across her business, you she was doing a lot of things. She’s one of these people, we’re gonna call her Sally, one of these people who has a lot of ideas and she’s always creating and she’s adding things. But when we got down to brass tacks, she was exhausted. And she always felt this unrelenting pressure that she was behind the eight ball. Like she needed to come up with the next thing. It needed to be something amazing and…
It required a lot of her energy. So, when she would think of this, although she was excited and that’s kind of where her head would go, she was exhausted. And the idea of doing more things and shouldering all that was killing her. So, we started working together and what we found was that there were specific things in her business that actually were her leaders, were the things that were bringing in most of her money, were the items that called in
the people into her shop. Some of those things were workshops that she ran. Other things were those special items that whenever you talk to someone, they were telling them, my gosh, I love this thing. I actually met someone at a networking event today who owns a coffee, like, tea cake shop. And when I asked them, what’s the thing that everyone buys? They’re like, my gosh, the mint brownies. Like, everybody talks about the mint brownies.
I’m like, my gosh, what could you do with the mint brownies? Like forget everything else, like let’s talk about the mint brownies. What was the same thing for Sally in her retail shop? She had revenue streams that were easy lifts because they were driving the revenue in her business. And not only that, when people came into her shop because of those things, guess what they did? They bought a bunch of other stuff. And when we leaned into that,
Jessica Miller (09:18.784)
And when we actually started to leverage those work streams specifically, not everything, and then we tied those worksheet streams to the other sales that were happening within her shop, she was exploding. Her Q4 revenue grew by 49%, 49%. She blew her own damn mind. And now that we’re in January, her revenue is at a growth rate of up 198%.
Because when you do something really well, when you can see that signal through the trees, you can then lean into it and you can make it work for you rather than doing all of the stuff, rather than launching all the new offers, rather than adding all the new things. We focused on the one leverage improvement. We got rid of all the new everything and we looked at where’s her money coming from? How do we optimize that? And we connected that to increasing order volume.
with her customers when they walked in the door. So, what does this mean for her? This means less work. It means protecting her CEO time. It means making one decision and increasing her revenue and her margin with ease. It was amazing. So, this is the type of thing I am talking about where growth did not come from more effort. It came from better discernment. It came from clarity. It came from creating something powerful. If you want to know where your energy is,
Or isn’t, if you wanna see those leaks in your business and think about it as part of your strategy, here is where you wanna look. You wanna look at your day. Where are those points where you’re rushed? Where are you reacting instead of choosing? Where are those places where you’re constantly like second guessing your intuition or you don’t fully trust yourself? Where are these decisions that feel heavy instead of clean and energy led? Energy leaks in your busy work. It leaks in your busy work.
And it comes up as things like over offering, making tons of decision that you later question, over efforting, over giving from a place of scarcity. And a lot of people think that they’re just like a hot mess, that it’s a discipline problem. If only they were doing this better. But I promise you, it is not actually a discipline problem. It’s a signal in your business. And it’s a place for you to notice where there are energy leaks, where that energy as a
Jessica Miller (11:46.305)
strong strategy is not being dialed in. Because working from energy, and sometimes I think we get this confused, when we think about energetic tools in our business, sometimes we think about this from the perspective of like, if my energy just feels good, it’s like I’m doing nothing. And when I’m really doing things, I’m like in the spreadsheets and I’m like, you know, doing all the tactical stuff. But it doesn’t mean doing nothing. It means intentionally protecting your space to think, not making decisions from an urgent place.
not having your hair on fire, letting your intuition guide you and prioritizing the things that you know are the things that you need to do. And many of us know what that is. It means like simplifying something instead of forcing a bunch of things through. This is how my clients create leverage. This is how I create leverage in my own business. And I promise you, this is how you can create leverage. Because when you do this, you create increased lifetime value. You clean up your offers. You make more money.
and you do it without adding in more noise and more complexity to your business. And when your energy and your clarity is clean, the leverage and those opportunities in your business become obvious. They become obvious. So here is one thing I want you to do coming out of this episode. I want you to identify one decision or one task that you have been forcing. Where have you been pushing it? Where have you been feeling that energetic leak? Where is that rub?
Where are you over-efforting, over-producing, over, over, over, adding, adding, adding where you do not need to? And instead of just pushing through it, instead of just thinking if I just worked more or harder, it will just work. I want you to pause and I want you to ask yourself, do I need to simplify this? Does it need to be easier? Do I need to delay it? Do I need to not be doing all of these things now? Do I need to remove it altogether? What is my one thing in this moment?
One thing, and often this one shift creates immediate relief. If I said to you, you cannot do anything else except for the one thing that you know you need to be doing right now that would move your business forward the most and feel the most amazing and easiest, what would it be? Because surprisingly, that immediate relief creates better results. It creates more energy and freedom in your business and more money. So,
Jessica Miller (14:10.358)
In closing, this year does not require you to work harder. It requires you to work simpler and cleaner. Energy isn’t the opposite of strategy. It is what makes the strategy effective. And if this year is about anything at all, let it be this. Do what works. Do it with clarity. Do it with intention. And with energy that actually supports the life and the business that you’re building. I promise it will be easier.
It will be more fun and it will be so much more powerful and so much more profitable. Have a beautiful week, everyone.
