00:01 – 00:45
Well, hello, everyone. Welcome back. So excited to be here with you this week. I have been doing some deep work in my business. I’ve been reassessing a lot of things. I’ve been thinking about profitability, been thinking about efficiency. And I’ve been leaning in to some what I want to call power moves in my business that I think are really important. And they are something that every entrepreneur needs to be leaning into. As I talked to friends and colleagues and even some of my clients over the last several weeks, I found that this particular power move has been something that has also affected their life and their business in a very, very powerful way.

Jessica Miller
00:45 – 01:22
And I think we’re onto something here. And so, I put this podcast together with the idea of sharing this with you with leaning in to kind of some of the behind-the-scenes things that I’m doing in my business. Some things that I’ve also learned from mentors of mine that I really admire and respect and watching them. And while I think that this is a really powerful lever in your own business for your growth and for your ability to thrive, I also think it’s one of those things that impact a lot of people when they see you behaving this way in your business and in your life.

Jessica Miller
01:22 – 01:59
I think it has a big impact in sort of how you show up and you showing up differently and that giving others some insights into how they can incorporate this special thing into their life too. The thing I want to talk about today is boundaries and not just general boundaries that we hear all the time but what I like to refer to as high profit boundaries. Boundaries that really foster massive growth, massive growth in your business, and massive growth in your life. And I think they’re somewhat nontraditional. So, I think a lot of people are overlooking them.

Jessica Miller
02:01 – 02:37
But I think what I’m about to share with you today is one of the things that is like the silent partner that could really catapult your success. If you lean into this in an intentional and in a great way. I think it’s something that really can help you. I have found that over the last six months of me thinking about this and probably the last six weeks of really leaning into it, I have seen a massive shift in not only my business, but in my personal life, in the way I’m showing up and how I’m feeling.

Jessica Miller
02:39 – 03:22
In the agency I have around everything and so I’m really compelled to talk about this because I think it has a huge impact on our results and I think it’s something that is simple and it’s high quality and very potent and you know I’m all about that. So, I want to talk about boundaries. These high, what I call these high profit boundaries and how I think, as I mentioned, that this is a power move for high earning entrepreneurs and entrepreneurs that want to live a full and rich life. And they want to do that by setting these boundaries in different areas that are really going to come back to them 10 times over.

Jessica Miller
03:24 – 04:00
I would stand on my podium and say that if you want more growth, if you want to do it more easily, if you want to do it in a more fun way, you need strong boundaries. And really what I think that means is that you need strong filters. You need to be able to filter out the things that are not serving you and creating boundaries. In these, I’m going to say three places. I really boiled it down to three places. are going to give you the best return on your investment and really help you create this, you know, high profit, high ease, high fun, total hell yes, life in business.

Jessica Miller
04:02 – 04:42
So here are the three boundaries that I think we need to really lean into, and I’m going to talk about each one of them. So, the first boundary is the boundary with your time, boundaries around your time. The second boundary is boundaries around your energy. And the third boundary is boundaries with what you consume. And I’m going to dive into each one of these in a little bit more detail. But those three things I have found have created the highest return on investment of my intentional focus and have created really so much more expansion, so much more profit, and so much more space in my business and in my life.

Jessica Miller
04:43 – 05:23
And I think starting here is actually one of the most powerful profit levers you can pull in your business. Because at the end of the day, and I say this all the time, you are your most important asset in your business. And for many of us, our business is nothing without us. So, protecting that asset, really making sure that it is moving through the world and through our businesses with high quality, with precision, with intention is really, really critical. So, I’m going to dive into each one of these things and talk to you a little bit about what I do and tell you what I am doing right now to really set these boundaries and put these filters in place.

Jessica Miller
05:23 – 06:06
And most importantly, try to systematize that, like standardize that as part of my business, because doing things really manually or having to think about it all the time, you know, it takes a lot of effort to do that. And I’m not about that. I want to make this like this is who I am. It becomes part of my identity. It’s just how I move through the day. I’ve also found that for me, when I get clear and I start to implement these things, it actually doesn’t take very long. And I know a lot of people have talked about habits and making changes, but I find if you have the clarity and your brain can get on board and you can see it and you can put these systems in place to really make it possible so it’s not a heavy lift, it’s kind of like rinse repeat, like let’s go, it’s this new version of who you are.

Jessica Miller
06:07 – 06:39
I always like make a joke about how it’s like Jess Miller 2.0. Okay, so jumping right in. So, the first boundary is boundaries with your time. So, time is one of your most, it’s one of your most highest value assets. And you know, we say it all the time, it’s one of the things you really can’t recreate. That being said, I think time is very malleable and very flexible. And we’ve all seen or had this experience of like flex with time based on what we’re doing and if we’re in flow and if we’re intentional and if we’re being efficient.

Jessica Miller
06:40 – 07:13
And so how we spend our time and the things that we do with that time are one of the most important decisions we can make in our business. And they have one of the biggest impacts on our results. Many, many times, and I have been guilty of this too, so this is not a judgment call at all. I think we all do this. I’m going to say 100%. There’s very few people who have gotten their arms around this where they’re now intentionally mastering what they’re doing with their time. I would say most of us are not using our time in the best way.

Jessica Miller
07:13 – 07:48
We’re likely spending a lot of it doing things that actually don’t move the needle for us. They’re sort of on autopilot. We’re not looking at the way we’re spending that time from a return-on-investment type of angle, which means that the things that we choose to do we’re not necessarily choosing intentionally with a result in mind. And then when we’re actually doing things, we’re not looking at doing those things the most efficiently. So, we’re just doing them the way that we’ve always done them. And therefore, most of that is very inefficient. And it’s not creating, you know, a high, sort of a high outcome, high impact situation.

Jessica Miller
07:50 – 08:20
So, when I thought about my time, I started to really think backwards, like, okay, what do I want in my life right now? What do I want more of? What are the things that are important to me? And then if I take a step backwards from that, like what kind of things do I need to be doing in my day? How do I need to be spending my time in order to make those things a reality? So, for example, if I wanted to spend more time in my business, working with my consulting clients, well, what kind of things am I doing every day to make that possible?

Jessica Miller
08:21 – 08:57
Right? Who am I speaking with? Where am I hanging out? What kind of content am I putting out there? What do I record on this podcast? Like all of those choices based on that result are important if I actually want to hit that as a goal or a result. So, I started to look at what do I really want and what am I doing? Then the thing that I did, which was like kind of revolutionary, but it’s like so easy and it’s kind of ridiculous. But I will tell you, this was one of the biggest impact things I did to shift my boundaries around how I’m spending my time, was I went and I looked at my calendar.

Jessica Miller
08:57 – 09:31
I did a calendar audit. And what I mean by that sounds very fancy, but what I basically did was like opened up my calendar and I looked back for this whole month. and I looked at all the things that were on my calendar and I tried to connect them to this ultimate result that I wanted. So, if I’m just talking about like working with consulting clients for example here and maybe I wanted to work with more of those people I started to look at all the time on my calendar and I asked myself the question like did this get me closer to or farther away from working with more consulting clients?

Jessica Miller
09:32 – 09:58
Did this connect me with them? Did it allow me to talk to them about my services? Did it allow me to meet them? Did it allow me to meet people that know them? Was it connected to my consulting side of my business at all? And this was actually a real question. I did ask myself this question because I was looking at my business holistically and trying to understand, you know, are the things that I’m doing in my business high impact or with my time high impact for my business? So, I carved out the consulting piece as an example.

Jessica Miller
09:59 – 11:21
And when I looked at that, the answer was no. No, it actually was no. And when I started to look at these different pieces, I started to realize that the results that I was seeing in that arm of my business were a direct correlation to where I was spending my time and what I was choosing to spend my time doing, and they were not connected. And therefore, if I was doing things that were not bringing in consulting business, then therefore the result I was getting was less consulting business. This was eye-opening for me because once I started to realize that, and I started to not only realize what was on my calendar that I didn’t want there, that was not connected to that result, but also the things that actually were, the next piece, which was looking at the calendar going forward, And what ended up happening was I ended up saying no to a lot of low leverage and frankly, for many things, low vibe opportunities or things that were on my calendar that were not going to get me closer to that result.

Jessica Miller
11:22 – 12:00
That looks like things like meetings I didn’t need to be, you know, taking part in. Sometimes intro calls that really didn’t make sense. Some organizations that I was part of that weren’t the right fit. distractions that I put on my calendar for things that I needed to work on that ultimately weren’t going to grow my business in the way that I wanted to. And things that when I just like leaned into it, they were just like draining. So, they were disconnected. They were not in alignment with what I actually wanted to be creating and they felt really draining to me.

Jessica Miller
12:03 – 12:47
When I looked at my calendar through that, and I put on this lens of what I like to call time discipline, and I looked at that through the result for me, which in this example, when I talk about my consulting business, I was looking at growing the business. So, I was looking at it through a revenue lens. I started to really uncover what kind of things that I needed to do with my time to get the results that I wanted. And not only did that open up a whole like logistical opportunity for me and my calendar, but it opened up white space, it opened up opportunities, and it opened up so much more intentionality and organization with what I was doing with my time.

Jessica Miller
12:48 – 13:21
And it created a very, very clear filter of what I was going to say yes to and what I was going to say no to. And here’s what I know to be true, because I’ve said this before, and this example of what I was going through with my time, and frankly, any of my boundaries, really validated and solidified this that I know to be true. Success and growing, profit, thriving, working with the great clients that you want to be working with, running a business and having a life that you really want comes from the subtracting.

Jessica Miller
13:22 – 14:03
It comes from the subtracting. It comes from the things that you are willing to take off of your plate, off of your calendar, off of your to-do list. that allow you to then say yes to the things that you actually want and are going to get you closer to what it is that you are trying to create. And the ability to do that and work through that filter and look at what kind of calls, what kind of opportunities, what kind of partnerships, what kind of calendar and office hours and things like that that I wanted, what do I want to be doing with my time to actually get the results that I wanted, was astounding.

Jessica Miller
14:04 – 14:38
And at the end of that, what I actually found, which I knew to be true, when it comes to time is that you actually need less of it than you think. And it needs to be more tailored to the things that really are going to move the needle for you. And so, the ability to put those boundaries around my time and subtract the things I didn’t need really, really helped move me into this space of higher profits, more ease, and a business that was growing in a more powerful way. So how do you think about time as your highest value asset?

Jessica Miller
14:39 – 15:14
And how do you set those boundaries around that time with the things that you’re going to say no to and the things you’re going to say yes to? The second piece was around boundaries with my energy. Not every opportunity deserves your bandwidth. And I know this is hard to understand for many of us, because I think as entrepreneurs, we just think if we want something, we want more of something, we should just work harder to get it. Like just put more energy behind it, right? Push harder. But the truth is that not every opportunity deserves that energy.

Jessica Miller
15:14 – 15:59
They’re not all created equal. And frankly, a lot of the time that we spend doing things is not actually leveraging our best energy. It’s not in our zone of genius. It’s really taxing our emotional capacity. It’s not the things that we enjoy doing. It doesn’t flow, our energy doesn’t flow around it. But we spend a lot of time leaning into these energetically draining places because we think that it is going to be the thing that grows our business. We think it’s going to be the thing that actually makes us more of whatever we want. And I think, as I said, this comes from a lot of conditioning that more equals more.

Jessica Miller
16:00 – 16:44
But in reality, it doesn’t. And what you do with your energy and where you channel it, you want to be looking through that lens of like high return and high, you know, profitability. And when I say profitability, I mean money. But I also mean like you’re profiting, like having a rich life and living a rich experience because you’re putting your energy into these places that really matter and that harness your energy in the most powerful way. for me that meant looking at what it was I wanted to create and where I did my best work and what lit me up and what were those things that really had a huge impact on my bottom line and my business thriving because they were energetically aligned.

Jessica Miller
16:45 – 17:16
I’ve said this before, but your body is a compass. It is a compass. I learned this from Martha Beck. If you don’t know her, you need to go check her out. She’s amazing. I trained under her. I’m certified under her as a coach. But one of the most powerful things I learned from her was like your body is a compass and your energy matters. So, we want to give ourselves the space, first of all, to feel into what it is that we’re doing and whether or not it makes the most sense. And we want to put boundaries around the things that don’t really help us.

Jessica Miller
17:16 – 17:49
They’re not energetically beneficial. And sometimes in business, as we know, there are things you have to do that you don’t really like. They’re not necessarily lighting you up. So maybe you can’t stop doing these things altogether. You’re not like jumping off of a cliff per se. Maybe you can if you have the resources for that. But the awareness alone is huge. The awareness to be able to lean into like this thing is energetically draining and this isn’t. When I do these things, I am energetically aligned and I’m getting results and I’m living a life and I’m spending my days in my business the way I want.

Jessica Miller
17:50 – 18:27
That alone is huge. It’s huge because it gives you an opportunity to now optimize it. right, to do a little bit of less of the things that you don’t feel energetically, you know, good about and more of the things that you do. And what I’ve also found is that when we think about things like our zone of genius, or we think about, like times of the day or different things where we’re actually performing at our best, what we really want to do is we want to be preserving our energy so that we can put that energy in those places because when we do, we have the highest ROI.

Jessica Miller
18:28 – 19:06
And that’s highest ROI on our business growing, like us making more money, us working with better clients. But it’s also ROI on the fun factor. We have the biggest return on the investment of that to have a life that feels good, have a business that feels good. So, it’s also like a return on investment of your happiness. and it is really important to understand how these things all are part of a whole and that our energy and our boundary around that energy is really key to building a business that is profitable and is fun and is thriving.

Jessica Miller
19:07 – 19:46
When your energy leaks, your profit leaks. So, looking at these boundaries that you have around what you’re doing with this time, right? What is the energy you’re putting out there? When do you want to be working? When do you not want to be working? What kind of things light you up and what doesn’t? What kind of people suck you of your energy and others that don’t? High quality experiences or environments, they’re all part of it. So, setting those boundaries around your energy is really important because when your energy level is dipping, when your energy is leaking, your profitability is dipping.

Jessica Miller
19:46 – 20:20
Your ability to thrive is dipping and it’s important and it affects everything. The third place is boundaries around what you consume. And I think this is such an important piece. And it’s something that I have talked about for a long period of time, but over the last six weeks, really leaned into and some of it sort of by accident with the result of it. But other parts of it have been an intentional thing that I’ve been doing for a long time. The quality of the output in your life and in your business is equal to the quality of your input.

Jessica Miller
20:21 – 20:59
And we have all heard this. This is not new and it’s not a just thing. This is a truth that the output is only as good as the things that you input. And that is true both physically and mentally. When we think about what we consume from a physical perspective, and what I mean by that is the food that you eat, maybe the alcohol you consume, your sleep quality, your environment, the things you put on your body, all of those things need to be done intentionally. And we need to have standards and boundaries around what those things are.

Jessica Miller
21:00 – 21:52
When we think about mental consumption, so things that we’re putting into our brain, what I mean by that is the type of content you consume, the conversations you’re having, your digital clutter, the things that you’re spending time focusing on, the mental airspace that you give things, the clutter that you’re carrying around in your brain. Like how many of us just are holding all of this stuff? Like it’s this invisible mental load. All of those things are part of what you consume. And having boundaries and having a standard and having a no-nonsense approach to what you’re going to let into your life and your body, your brain and your body, is crucial in order to keep this asset, you, in tip-top shape at the highest quality.

Jessica Miller
21:54 – 22:33
Many, many, many of us do not focus on this at all. We are doing this very unintentionally. And when we start to lean in to this part of this equation, I will tell you, it actually spills over and drives so much of what we talked about earlier, which is what we’re spending our time doing. Energetically, like where our energy is going. We start to realize that so much of what we are consuming as a sort of baseline foundational level are driving also the boundaries in these other areas. Now, I will tell you what I mean by this and I’ll give you an example.

Jessica Miller
22:35 – 23:17
I have been on a health journey for many years. I had a lot of issues with what I thought was reflux, but it was basically more of like an intestinal sort of overgrowth that I had that was causing sort of reflux. And I started to go on this journey and this adventure of figuring out what exactly I was inputting into my system. And I started to kind of peel those layers back and look at all of those things. And what I found was the quality of the food that I was eating, the quality of the ingredients I was using, the time of day, the way that I was thinking about all of these things coming together, my meals, all of it, had a huge, huge, huge impact in my life.

Jessica Miller
23:18 – 23:49
And at some point, I decided, you know what, if I believe that my body is a really important Asset, what I put into this is of utmost importance. Now, what I will tell you is I’m not one of these people who does really well with so many different options and a lot of heavy lift and I’m not like a gourmet chef and I’m not doing all those things. So, I was like, how do I make this as simple as possible for me to consume the things that I really wanted? And what I essentially did was I said no to all the things that really did not agree with my body.

Jessica Miller
23:50 – 24:22
Now, when I say this, it was not a perfect system. I wasn’t like, oh, I’m just a clean eater now and everything’s going to be perfect. What I basically did was tried to phase out some of the things that I knew wasn’t making me feel well. And as a result, what happened by moving into that headspace was I became a person who identified as somebody who only eats really high-quality foods. So, I might eat things sometimes that don’t agree with my body, but I’ve raised the bar that I’m not going to like buy the Twinkies from the gas station kind of a thing.

Jessica Miller
24:24 – 25:01
As a result of that, I started to function better. I cured my SIBO. I made better choices. Those choices impacted my family, impacted what we ate as a family on a day-to-day basis. It affected what my husband was eating. And by the way, he’s the cook in the house and he’s amazing. But it affected what he was doing and how he was preparing foods and what that meant for all of us. Everything went up when I decided to change what I was doing with my physical consumption. One of the things I also identified was there were certain things that really aggravated me, like sugar really aggravated me, coffee really aggravated me.

Jessica Miller
25:02 – 25:36
Caffeine was not great. Many people are shocked to know that I have not drank a cup of caffeinated beverage since 2017. I do not drink any caffeine. But I was really sort of on a decaf coffee kick every now and then. Well, long story short, about six weeks ago now, when we entered into Lent, I was like, I’m just going to give up all sugar, just no, no sugar, no sweets. And I just took it out of my routine. And I set some boundaries around what that looked like, like if it was a sweet, or if it was sugar, the answer was no.

Jessica Miller
25:36 – 26:07
And it was that simple. And I’m here to report that here we are, a few days from Easter, and I have not had sugar at all. Actually, that’s a lie. My kids have birthdays in March, so I did have a bite of their birthday cakes, because you got to do it when they’re little. But that was it. And the interesting thing is I can’t tell you how much better I feel. So much better. And because I feel so much better, I am sleeping better. I am, I have more energy when I’m sitting in front of my computer.

Jessica Miller
26:08 – 26:43
I’m not crashing at the end of the day. It was such a simple tweak, but it had such a profound effect on how I was showing up. The other thing that it did, switching over into this sort of mental consumption, is that, I don’t know about all of you, but when I am tired and I am feeling terrible, I do a lot of things that are probably not great for me, like endlessly scroll on social media because I want to detach and I’m out of it. Or, you know, I start to like revenge stay up late at night because I feel like I can’t go to sleep because I’m wired because I don’t feel well and now, I’m pinching my sleep.

Jessica Miller
26:44 – 27:21
So, what ended up happening because I was feeling better was, I was making better choices with my consumption of these intangible things, so these mental things. So, I wasn’t doing things that I know were like an endless loop of misery. I wasn’t, you know, binging out on social media. I wasn’t, you know, not exercising. I wasn’t doing things like that because I actually physically felt better. And so, it spilled over into these mental choices. So, I have more agency around the things that I’m consuming online or what I’m doing with different people or the people that I’m spending my time with.

Jessica Miller
27:22 – 28:13
I feel more organized because I feel like I’m on top of my game. All of that consumption has actually also gone up and it has had a huge impact on my business. So, these boundaries around what we consume physically, what we consume mentally, and how those filtering mechanisms like thinking through what we’re consuming and setting up those boundaries keeps your mind clear and it keeps you sharp, like strategically sharp on your game, you’re functioning better. There’s um, stabilization of your mood and your energy. You just feel more grounded. So, boundaries around those consumptions of both that physical and mental, um, you know, things is so important.

Jessica Miller
28:13 – 28:57
And it’s something that as far as me, like really thriving in my life has been something that has had a huge impact. And I think for all of you that are listening to this, it is something to absolutely lean into. because when we’re thinking about growth, and again, like business growth, personal growth, like why are these boundaries that we create so important? And they’re important because when you have more focus, when you’re doing things more intentionally, when you’re using your time more intentionally, when you’re thinking about your energy and consuming that and sending boundaries in a certain way, when you’re thinking about what you’re putting into either your brain or your body in a very specific way, when you have more focus, you make faster decisions.

Jessica Miller
28:58 – 29:32
When you make faster decisions, there’s less burnout. And you have a more scalable business. Things just move more easily. You’re not letting your business or your brain or your time or the things that you’re doing drag you around all over the place. You have boundaries and standards around what it is. And I have seen this not only work in my life, but I’ve seen this with my clients as well. I’ve seen clients that I’ve decided there’s days of the week they’re not working. I’ve had clients decide there are things that they’re not doing and they’re outsourcing.

Jessica Miller
29:33 – 30:07
I’ve had clients that have decided that there are people they are not going to spend their time with, clients that are toxic that they’re not gonna work with. One of my mentors, Laura Meyers, who’s amazing, amazing, really taught me by how she runs her business and the things that she talks about how to set good boundaries and how that really manifests in your life. And I’m a better consultant, I have a better structure in my business, and I’m a happier person because I started to emulate what she was doing. and started to see how it was impacting her life and the successes that she had.

Jessica Miller
30:07 – 30:35
And she has built an amazing business. She’s built an amazing framework around helping consultants build their businesses. She’s built a business around how to, you know, help people create info products and all different things. I mean, it is limitless what she can do. And a big part of that, of course, she’s brilliant and amazing, and you should totally go check her out. And I will put her link in my show notes. But she’s decided what she’s going to say yes to and what she’s going to say no to. And that is really, really, really powerful.

Jessica Miller
30:35 – 31:06
And it has had a huge impact on my life and my business because she is all about that creating, you know, more by doing less. And that is just sings to my heart. So, there are many, many people that I can see in my life that have also done this that are thriving. And so how do we build these, you know, tools around this? How do we think about that? How can you leverage some of the things that I talked about today when I talked about, you know, looking at your calendar, doing a calendar audit, figuring out how the things that you’re spending your time doing are actually connecting to the results that you have or not? How do you say no to more things that are not serving you? How do you audit your energy? Like lean into that body compass. What things are really draining you? What things do you feel like you have boundless energy you could do it all day long? You know, taking notice of that and then making decisions as a result of what you find is huge.

boundaries around what you consume. What are you literally putting in your mouth and on your body? Can you be more intentional with that? Can you decide what things are actually getting you closer to those results you want to be creating in the life you want to be living and what is not? And can you dial down the things that aren’t? And when it comes to those sort of that mental load, What kind of things are you consuming, right? What kind of content are you spending your time mired in? Where are you like on your phone consuming things you don’t need to be consuming?
