[00:00:00]
Jessica Miller: Hello everyone and welcome back to this week’s episode of the It’s Your Offer podcast. I’m so excited to be here in the studio with Dr. Megan Garcia Webb today to talk all things weight medicine and your health and to really understand what I think is a really important and useful topic for many of us listening to the show and also to look at her business and how it’s evolved and how she came up with this awesome offer that she offers to help her patients.
[00:00:28] Megan, I’m so excited to have you here. You’re welcome. Thank you so much for having me. I’m excited to be here. Yeah, this is gonna be amazing for our listeners Will you introduce yourself? Tell us a little bit about you and your business.
[00:00:40]
Dr. Meghan Garcia-Webb: Sure. So I am trained as a internal medicine physician and I’ve been practicing primary care at an academic medical center in Boston for about 10 years and I realized pretty early on that if you are in primary care, you are [00:01:00] doing obesity medicine.
[00:01:01] And so I decided to go more deeply into that. And I did my obesity medicine boards and that’s been a wonderful part of what I do, but also, you know, it’s, um, there’s a lot of, um, medical, uh, aspects to why people have weight issues, but also there’s a huge component that we don’t really address in.
[00:01:24] Medicine, and that is the mindset of why people are having trouble losing the weight. And so that’s why I decided to launch my, um, concierge practice, which really blends medicine with life coaching. I got certified in, um, 20, I want to say 2022, um, as a life coach to really address both aspects of that for people.
[00:01:46] Um, and then I talk to people all the time, um, on my YouTube channel as well, which is Dr. Weight Medicine with Dr. Megan.
[00:01:54]
Jessica Miller: I love this. So it’s so interesting because, you know, as a pharmacist, I remember coming out of [00:02:00] pharmacy school and I was like, this is my path, traditional pharmacy. And you know, I’m going to do this for the next whatever, 40 years of my life.
[00:02:07] And here I am not taking that traditional path. But when you started, you were on this very traditional path and you started talking to these patients. And what were you hearing that was really like piquing your interest to? You know, go in a different direction. Can you talk a little bit about that? What were people telling you and what problem were you seeing?
[00:02:28] Sure. It was just, um,
[00:02:30]
Dr. Meghan Garcia-Webb: you know, you would, I would talk to people, they would tell me all about their issues with their weight and they were so frustrated and. Then I would see them again in six months and it’s, you know, you’re just having the same conversation over and over and it’s like, it’s like we, we’ve gone over, you know, what to do.
[00:02:48] We’ve had a plan, but it, they’re having a really hard time implementing that and, um, It’s that whole idea of, like, I know what I need to do, but I just can’t make myself [00:03:00] do it. And I thought, like, we don’t really address that terribly well in medicine. Like, we have all the information, but actually helping people implement it.
[00:03:10] I mean, first of all, we never have the time to do that. Like, you’re so limited by, like, the, the, The, the amount of time you’re given an appointment that you don’t really have the opportunity to sit down and really do more of a deep dive with people. And I think it, it, it’s not just weight, it’s, it’s addiction, it’s, you know, um, anxiety, depression, all these other, um, issues that people have that, you know, they involve.
[00:03:37] medical issues for sure, but they also involve a lot of dialogue with the patient that our current structure does, doesn’t really allow for.
[00:03:46]
Jessica Miller: Yeah, I completely agree. And I, I also feel like when it comes to weight medicine, you know, it’s complex. I mean, you could say all medicine is complex, right? You know, humans are complex.
[00:03:59] So [00:04:00] it’s very nuanced and it’s very important that there’s that time and that individuality It comes into the conversation, I think in the, uh, information age that we’re in right now for good or bad, depending on how you look at it, um, People are receiving a lot of different messages and they’re trying to piece this together.
[00:04:21] In a way that is, is complex. So there’s the part of like what they understand, um, what they are trying to figure out is accurate or not accurate. And then there’s the nuance of, um, what is actually going on with them. Like a 21 year old, uh, woman might be totally different than like a menopausal woman at 65 type of thing.
[00:04:43] So I, I feel like there’s a part of this too, where there might be coming to you to try to get that direction. Like what is even real? Where should I go? And then there’s the other execution piece too. Are you seeing that they’re having trouble in all of those [00:05:00] places?
[00:05:00]
Dr. Meghan Garcia-Webb: Yeah, absolutely. I think you make such a good point.
[00:05:03] And that is like, I think in America, we really ask people to just reinvent the wheel on their own all the time because we don’t really have a culture that really supports people’s health. So I tell patients all the time, like if you just do the default, you will not be healthy. Like you will be unwell because we are, you know, our culture really prioritizes, um, being productive, this kind of go, go, go mindset.
[00:05:31] And not like thinking about what you’re eating, planning what you’re eating, and, and we don’t really have that structure that, that does it for us in the way that people who live in other countries, they don’t have to think about it as much because it’s just kind of baked into their everyday life. And so here we.
[00:05:49] you know, the default culture is unhealthy.
[00:05:52]
Jessica Miller: And
[00:05:52]
Dr. Meghan Garcia-Webb: then there’s so much information that people get really overwhelmed. They get really confused. Yeah. I think that’s part of the reason why people are so drawn to [00:06:00] supplements. Cause it’s like, well, this seems easy. It seems healthy, right? It’s like a one, one thing you can do, but it’s, you know, so.
[00:06:08] I think that’s, you know, people get led into these, these pathways that are maybe not as, you know, addressing the root cause, but they, they might think that they are, um, and they just get really overwhelmed. So I do. And, and then people, um, you know, it’s very. Very easy to kind of stay confused.
[00:06:28]
Jessica Miller: Yes.
[00:06:28]
Dr. Meghan Garcia-Webb: You know.
[00:06:29]
Jessica Miller: Totally. I feel like it’s also people are hanging out in certain places. Those places are talking about one thing over the other. It sounds really good. To your point, um, about supplements, I mean, it’s the accessibility of that too. This whole idea, like I am going to take a pill and solve the problem is super alluring.
[00:06:49] It’s like the shortest path to result, and people really get, um, you know, drawn to that. And I understand that perspective, um, but it sounds [00:07:00] like that’s great as long as they’re running alongside someone who knows how to put those pieces together in the best way that can help them. And I think you saw that need.
[00:07:11] And you were somewhat confined by the environment that you were in. And so you saw an opportunity to sort of step out of that and do this better. Tell us a little bit about that. Cause I think that’s what spearheaded your starting your own business. Yeah, absolutely.
[00:07:26]
Dr. Meghan Garcia-Webb: Um, yeah, the more I started learning about, I mean, I didn’t really know much about life coaching for a long time and, um, we don’t, we don’t learn about it in medicine at all.
[00:07:37] Um, but I really liked the idea of, you know, you, you, You hear a lot about therapy and I always think of therapy as, you know, it’s, it’s helping people who are really having a dysfunction in one area of their life and really helping them get to functional. And then life coaching is really how do you get from good to great?
[00:07:58] Like somebody is doing fine. It’s [00:08:00] not an issue of like getting to work or getting their things done, but it’s really like they want to be better. And so I really, once I learned more about that. You know, I think there’s all these like woo woo ideas about life coaching and, and it is, it’s like completely unregulated industry.
[00:08:17] So I think there’s, there’s like anything else, there’s great life coaches, there’s, there are people who are not great in, in, and that applies to everything. But um, I really started learning about it more and I was thinking, you know, I feel like this is the missing piece for so much of what people are struggling with is this idea of, you know, How do I get myself to do what I Want to do but I haven’t been able to make myself do and I just felt like it was such an elegant solution because it actually doesn’t take a huge amount of work, but you do have to know what you’re looking for and [00:09:00] so when you can really be so targeted and I think that’s Why it was helpful being in medicine because I’ve seen these patterns over and over, but life coaching really gave me the tool to say, ah, okay, so now that we have this type of pattern, this is a solution that we’re going to use for that.
[00:09:17] And that’s been so helpful for people.
[00:09:19]
Jessica Miller: I love that. So you decided to combine those two things and talk a little bit about how you work with people now because there is this component of your business that lit me up when I was thinking from the offers perspective, but also from the patient perspective of this really concierge approach.
[00:09:37] And I love this because it’s very individualized, It’s very high touch and it’s very results driven. It was created because there was a gap and you wanted to fill it. So tell us a little bit about how you work with people and how that looks now.
[00:09:51]
Dr. Meghan Garcia-Webb: Yeah. So for people in, um, my concierge practice, it’s really, it’s blending the medical aspect with the life coaching aspect.
[00:09:59] So [00:10:00] I meet with people for six months at a time. We do what I call a weight overhaul. And part of that is doing a deep dive on all the medical issues that are going on for them and making sure we’re not missing anything in terms of why. They have extra weight. Um, because a lot of times there are things that, you know, haven’t been diagnosed or, you know, maybe they have sleep apnea, maybe they have a thyroid issue, but also medications are such a large part of weight gain.
[00:10:32] And I don’t think people are very aware of that. And so it’s finding like, Oh, so you’ve been on gabapentin and the dose has been going up for. you know, months and also you can’t lose weight and you’re doing all the right things. So it’s just making sure that we’ve addressed everything. Um, and, and sometimes I’ll use a medication like a GLP one for people.
[00:10:54] It’s always my preference to my, my greatest thrill in life is helping people lose weight without needing medication. [00:11:00] But Um, but it’s also recognizing, you know, there are some people where, you know, maybe they’re on psychiatric medications that really work for them. We don’t want to change them. And so it’s like, sometimes people can do all the right things and the weight isn’t going to move the way it might for somebody who’s not on those medications.
[00:11:19] So it’s just being very. Direct about that and then so that’s one component and then the other part is the coaching part So I meet with people for 45 minutes every week We do a deep dive and it’s really removing those mental roadblocks from that Keep them from where they want to get it prevent them from being at a healthy weight and then along the way we’ll do things like a DEXA scan, you know, you know at the beginning and at the end and and the goal is really Kind of up to them.
[00:11:51] It’s definitely not like a lose 20 pounds in 20 weeks type of program. It’s really moving upstream and Finding out [00:12:00] working on more what their their goals are what a healthy weight looks like for them removing all the shoulds like what I should look like what I should be doing and making sure that that how they move forward with their Eating with their exercise is what they want to do because we know from the data that if people don’t like, if it’s not sustainable, like why bother?
[00:12:25] Because people just won’t stick with them.
[00:12:27]
Jessica Miller: Yeah, absolutely. And I think you touched on something which is really important, which is it is so multifaceted. And I think one of the biggest breakdowns I have seen take any like sort of medical overarching topic. But if we talk about weight loss specifically, um, There are so many solutions that are actually not the solution because the pieces are not cohesive.
[00:12:52] So, you know, people might lean into one piece more than the other, and they’re not seeing the holistic view. [00:13:00] And I think sometimes we negate that there’s this little thing over here that we just happen to not see or happen to not talk about, like you said, like a medication someone’s taking or some nuance there that they didn’t mention or you didn’t know to ask for.
[00:13:15] And that could have a major implication on the whole system. And it’s really important that people are working with somebody who can see all those pieces. I think especially when it comes to some sort of intervention with your body.
[00:13:29]
Dr. Meghan Garcia-Webb: Yeah, absolutely. I was, while you were saying that, it just came to mind, like somebody that I’ve been working with, you know, the big thing for them was actually, uh, they had this idea that they, because they had family members that were, had these chronic health issues, they felt very guilty.
[00:13:48] When they were getting healthier like whenever their family member had a flare They really felt like like that’s when they would stress eat and that’s when they were essentially like make themselves sick Along with the person [00:14:00] and so when you point that out to them and you say oh, you know what? Like this is a pattern.
[00:14:06] Do you see that you’re doing this and you see that it’s this it’s it’s not that you can’t lose Weight, it’s that you you feel like you You, you have to suffer with them. You can’t be healthy if they’re sick. And you know, when you take that piece out, like everything changed for that person. They’re like, Oh my gosh.
[00:14:26] Like, and also like, it’s much better for this person to not be sick when their family member is sick. They can help them so much more.
[00:14:35]
Jessica Miller: Right. Right. Yeah. So
[00:14:36]
Dr. Meghan Garcia-Webb: it’s, it’s things like that that you don’t even expect
[00:14:39]
Jessica Miller: that
[00:14:40]
Dr. Meghan Garcia-Webb: can be playing such a huge role in, in why somebody can’t make the changes.
[00:14:45]
Jessica Miller: Yeah. Yeah. And I think you just mentioned it, but it’s this concept of like, there are some of these self sab, sabotaging behaviors and, and there’s also some brass tacks things that are affecting it.
[00:14:56] And it’s the intersection of those things. Um. [00:15:00] Yes. And it’s hard to read the bottle when you’re inside of it, right? Because we’re all living our life and we are sort of a slave to our own habits and behaviors just becomes invisible. Um. I think the other thing that you mentioned too, which I think is a really important piece of the work that you do is you’re like looking for those powerful levers.
[00:15:21] Like this is a big thing that’s affecting this holistic system. And if we just like take a little scalpel and change this little piece, we will change the whole system in a big way. I think sometimes people get overwhelmed because it’s like, yep, you could change your weight or your lifestyle with these easy 45 steps.
[00:15:38] Here you go. And then it’s so complicated. But they’re not looking for the next best and easiest solution for people and to meet them where they’re at. To really introduce that change in a way that is a much easier lift. Yeah, I feel
[00:15:55]
Dr. Meghan Garcia-Webb: like people, there’s this idea of like, oh, if you want to get healthy, you need a [00:16:00] huge team.
[00:16:00] Overhauling a team. You need to, you need to throw like a hundred thousand dollars at this and like be a celebrity and there’s no hope for you if you don’t, if you can’t do that because you need a dietician. You need all these people to like, You know keep you on the straight and narrow and my whole goal is like no you can keep yourself on the straight and narrow We just need to figure out what led you astray in the in the past And so I don’t think like I don’t and sometimes I will but usually I don’t feel like people need to see a Dietitian all the time.
[00:16:35] They don’t need like you don’t need a personal trainer. You don’t need all these other people It’s great If you want to and I would never say don’t do that if somebody wanted to pursue it, but I think I think being healthy is not as hard as we make it out to be in this country and and they’re a lot healthier in other places where they don’t spend nearly as much Resources on being healthy.
[00:16:59] [00:17:00] So I think there is this idea of like, it’s very confusing and I have to do all these things and it’s just going to be a lot like who wants to do more work, right? Right. Absolutely. People just think like, Oh, now I have to add one more thing to my plate. And I just want to tell people like, no, it can be.
[00:17:18] Yeah. Easier and better. Yeah. That’s my goal. It’s like, this can be a lot simpler than you think it is.
[00:17:24]
Jessica Miller: Yeah. Yeah. Oh my gosh. I was laughing with somebody before about how, you know, people ask you, what’s your word for the year? And I’m like, oh, I don’t have a word. But I decided my word, quote unquote, is fun and easy.
[00:17:35] Fun and easy. Those are my two words. But I think growth and success is really in the subtracting. It’s not in the adding. Absolutely. And there are things that we are doing that are holding us back, um, and there are interventions that we’re taking that we probably don’t need. And some of it is optimizing that and some of it is removing the hurdles, um, and doing it in a way that’s safe and it’s results driven.
[00:17:57] And it feels, to your point that you made earlier, [00:18:00] easy. It feels like it fits. It just becomes part of what we do. Um, and I think our brains need to be on board, like when we can connect the dots or somebody can connect the dots for us and we can see logically how this works and how it’s operational. our brain gets on board.
[00:18:19]
Dr. Meghan Garcia-Webb: Yeah. Yeah. I work, you know, I work with a lot of professionals, doctors, and, and I think sometimes like how they’re eating is like the only fun thing in their day. Right. And it’s like, welcome. Right. And it’s like, like, Don’t want to do this like I want to keep snacking it like there’s a part of me that really wants to keep snacking at night Because it’s fun and it’s a relaxation.
[00:18:43] It’s like don’t take that away from me And so what I want to tell people is like we’re gonna make it better like yes, you’re still gonna have the fun I’m I would never take like chocolate away from people, you know, whatever you want to keep we’re gonna keep We’re just gonna do it a way where you [00:19:00] Yeah.
[00:19:01] And you’re not beating yourself up after snacking or whatever, like, like the water’s warm, you know, like it’s going to be, that’s what I want people to know, it’s going to be even better.
[00:19:12]
Jessica Miller: Yeah. Yeah. Do you find that there are any tools that you use, what I mean by this, any tools that you use that you know almost a hundred percent of the time you’re going to use with all of your patients?
[00:19:25] Almost everyone that comes in, there’s been this thing that I have found that really, you know, kind of helps every person. We’re all kind of stuck in this one place. Um, it’s not a silver bullet, but it’s, it’s something that you found. Really makes a difference
[00:19:42]
Dr. Meghan Garcia-Webb: that is such a great question. Um, I think along the the the line of coaching this idea of of really understanding what personal responsibility is is very dramatic for people because so [00:20:00] many people have this idea of like well but I have to do this or I have to do that or that’s just the way it is and just really questioning Those beliefs for people can be very powerful.
[00:20:16] It’s like no you don’t have to eat Whatever your grandmother is giving you right, you know Or you don’t have to because your your spouse loves to cook
[00:20:29]
Jessica Miller: You don’t
[00:20:29]
Dr. Meghan Garcia-Webb: actually have to eat it
[00:20:31]
Jessica Miller: You
[00:20:31]
Dr. Meghan Garcia-Webb: know and how can we find a way that you can say no or like if you’re going to a party you don’t have to drink At the party if you feel like it’s gonna make you feel awful the next day, right?
[00:20:43] Mm hmm. So really questioning these things that people think are just facts, where they actually have so much more personal control. Yes. It makes a huge difference for people, but it’s, it is, it’s one of those things that [00:21:00] they just, it’s very invisible. And so I think that’s why the coach is so helpful because it’s like, you don’t, you don’t have to do anything.
[00:21:06] Right. Yeah. You can go to a restaurant and not eat if you wanted to. That’s totally an option.
[00:21:14]
Jessica Miller: Yeah. It makes me think of like identity work. I mean, people have so many identities around everything, but food and health is one of them. Um, um, I remember thinking about. Uh, this idea of the difference between someone who’s trying not to be something or someone who just isn’t.
[00:21:32] I remember using the example of someone who is not a smoker versus someone who is trying to not smoke. And the person who is not a smoker has the identity. of someone who doesn’t ever think about smoking. It’s not that they are a smoker trying not to smoke, they just don’t smoke. Um, and I feel like in the, you know, health and weight world, I see this a lot with, um, alcohol.
[00:21:58] It really is a part of [00:22:00] someone’s identity. Um, and people have trouble breaking the habit, but more from the perspective of the identity piece than the actual habitual. Like behavior piece. Um, I used to be like that with pasta. I come from a big Italian family. You eat pasta. It’s what you do But then I realized I don’t identify as a pasta eater So I actually never eat pasta as a as an adult not because I’m trying not to Right.
[00:22:27] It’s just not part of what I specifically do So it’s really interesting how that identity Piece shows up for everybody.
[00:22:37]
Dr. Meghan Garcia-Webb: Yeah, it is so important. And, um, it is you just said something that was so Just hit the nail on the head for me. It’s like when we’re trying not to do something It’s like you’re grappling with this Um, you know, this overdesire piece, and you’re giving [00:23:00] yourself the option, you know, of like, I might, I should, but I’m not going to, and it’s just so much mental work, whereas if you can get yourself to the place of like, I just don’t do that.
[00:23:11] Right. Right. And that, that eliminates so much mental work and it eliminates that kind of nagging piece for people. So I think that, um, yeah, and that extends to so many things beyond food as well. Yeah. And sometimes people are like, to your point about the pasta, it’s like, sometimes you just have to question like, Do, do I even want the pasta?
[00:23:32] Like this is something that we’ve been doing, but like if I could do anything, do I want it or do I not want it? And if I want it, I’m sure there’s a way to eat pasta in a healthy way, but I also like, it might not be as important to me as I initially thought.
[00:23:47]
Jessica Miller: Yeah. I think a lot of that also stemmed and I think weight is one of those things where, um, you know, there’s the physical component of it.
[00:23:55] I’ll just speak from a female perspective, you know, I think weight is [00:24:00] very important to me as a female. And some of that is societal, I think it’s probably important to everyone, but I hear a lot from my female friends. And the choices we make are definitely a combination of what do we want or think is the right, is the right thing, what should we be doing?
[00:24:18] And then the other part is, is this even really enjoyable or helping me? Like when I eat pasta, it’s very heavy on my system. So I just discovered this actually isn’t going to get me closer than what I, to what I want and it doesn’t feel great. And then there’s the other part of the like, okay, well, do I feel like I should be doing this or, or not?
[00:24:40] That should part of my identity. But I think when I step into someone who wants to be healthy and maintain a weight that feels good for me, and I look at these pieces as data points, The pasta doesn’t make the cut, you know what I mean? Sometimes it does, but many times it doesn’t, um, but I [00:25:00] didn’t get there on my own.
[00:25:01] You know, I got there from talking to a lot of people and having somebody like you hold the mirror up and just say, here’s what’s going on. Do you want to choose it? Because to your point, you have the choice.
[00:25:11]
Dr. Meghan Garcia-Webb: Yeah, and it’s so much easier when you’re realizing that you have the conscious choice and then it’s not like oh I shouldn’t have the pasta.
[00:25:19] Right? It’s like that’s right. I actually don’t want it. I can have so much It’s there’s the drama’s gone It’s just like the result is the same like you don’t eat the pasta, but in the second scenario, it’s just like It just evaporates all the mental drama. Yes, and that’s my whole goal It’s just freeing people from these like mental prisons that we put ourselves in especially women
[00:25:43]
Jessica Miller: But
[00:25:44]
Dr. Meghan Garcia-Webb: you know this diet culture and you know, my dream for people is that you know People can sit in a room with all their favorite foods Yeah, surrounded by them and they’re just eating when they’re hungry stopping when they’re full They’re not like white knuckling their way through the [00:26:00] meal.
[00:26:01] They’re not like wishing they could have more it’s just like It’s just easy for them.
[00:26:05]
Jessica Miller: Yes, yes. And you tell me where I’m wrong, but the first time that somebody does that is one of the most liberating experiences of their entire life because they step into a person who can do anything. Yeah. They are not chained for it.
[00:26:20] It might start with this conversation and work with weight loss, but then it moves to everything else. Like, I don’t have to engage in the conversation. I don’t have to hang around with the people that don’t make me feel good. Like, I can. Not engage in this. I have control over what I choose.
[00:26:35]
Dr. Meghan Garcia-Webb: Yes. This whole idea of autonomy and just, you know, I, um, I’m choosing things.
[00:26:43] Yes. I’m not at the whim of the whatever pops into my head
[00:26:48]
Jessica Miller: Yeah,
[00:26:49]
Dr. Meghan Garcia-Webb: and the external environment, right, right It’s the internal cues that are driving my behavior and it’s like what I want Right. And so when people are driven to [00:27:00] Eat how they want to eat, exercise how they want to exercise, they feel so much better because, especially if you think about sustainability, it’s like, yeah, I could definitely do this for decades, of course, this is what I want to do, as opposed to like, well, I should do this, because Somebody on TikTok told me like this is the way to get shredded, right?
[00:27:21] It’s like, it’s like, is that how you want to, is that how you want to live? Like, maybe, but also like, maybe not. Right, right, right. No
[00:27:30]
Jessica Miller: judgment
[00:27:30]
Dr. Meghan Garcia-Webb: if that’s
[00:27:30]
Jessica Miller: you, it’s totally fine.
[00:27:31]
Dr. Meghan Garcia-Webb: No judgment. And I think there are a lot of people out there that are doing great work for, you know, helping people. And I send people to the internet all the time, like check out these workouts, you know, but also I think we use these videos.
[00:27:45] Uh, we use all this advice as evidence kind of against ourselves, it’s like, you know, this is what I should be doing, right? Yeah.
[00:27:51]
Jessica Miller: Yes.
[00:27:51]
Dr. Meghan Garcia-Webb: And you don’t have to do that. It’s much better when it comes from, like, what do you want to do?
[00:27:57]
Jessica Miller: Yeah. Yeah. I love that so much. And then they also [00:28:00] take responsibility and accountability for it.
[00:28:02] It’s not like my doctor is telling me to do this and I have to do it and I don’t really want to do it. It’s my, like, I’m choosing it. It’s mine. It’s, in, in many ways, when people can feel like it’s their decision and they came up with it. It’s even. which I think is amazing. Um, right. You talked a little bit earlier about environment and I know this is a part of your concierge service where, you know, What’s happening in people’s space and their habits and those behaviors are also a big part of their success.
[00:28:31] And so part of your, um, work and how you work with clients is you’ll come to them in some capacity. Can you talk a little bit about that? Because I thought this was amazing and what a part of your offer.
[00:28:42]
Dr. Meghan Garcia-Webb: Yeah, yeah, yeah. So most of the work takes place over, um, remotely over telehealth. Um, And that just seems to work best for people.
[00:28:53] But every once in a while, you know, I do want to check in on people’s blood pressure or measurements and, and usually we, you know, [00:29:00] I will just pick a way to monitor their progress whether it wants, whether they want to do by the scale or some people hate the scale, they want to go by their clothing size and that’s fine.
[00:29:11] So we kind of determine how we’re going to look at that. Every once in a while, I will do a house call. Um, people can show me and it’s really up to them. Like I’ll do certain things at every house call. Like we’ll do their blood pressure. We’ll take some measurements, but also like, do you want to show me your fridge?
[00:29:28] Do you not want to show me your fridge? Do you want to show me your gym? Like, like you can show me anything that’s helpful for you. And I’m happy to weigh in on it. Um, and I’m such a huge fan of the home workouts for especially parents, like working parents. I think gyms are amazing, but I don’t think you necessarily need to go to one all the time.
[00:29:49] Um, I mean, some people, it really depends again on. what you want your life to look like. If you want to be going to the gym, having that social aspect, getting out of the house, not having your [00:30:00] kids around. Some people really love that. And then some people are like, I just don’t want to commute. Like that’s a big barrier for some people or it’s a big draw for other people.
[00:30:10] So for those people where it is, especially if they’ve little kids, you know, you can work out, you don’t need any equipment. At all. You can just, I’ve worked out in like very small hotel rooms before, like you can make it work. Right. So I’m happy to, to help people brainstorm those kinds of ideas too.
[00:30:31]
Jessica Miller: Yeah.
[00:30:31] That’s amazing. That pull through I think is so important, um, and, and making it, you know, like executable for people. Because again, all the best information and all the best tools, that’s great, but people have to actually. Implement it in their life and if they’re getting held up by I’m driving an hour each way to the gym or, um, listen, I have all the wrong things that I don’t want to be eating in my house.
[00:30:58] Like even it’s just the tiniest [00:31:00] things that really can make a huge impact.
[00:31:02]
Dr. Meghan Garcia-Webb: Well, then the one I hear all the time right now is like, well, I want to exercise, but it’s cold.
[00:31:08]
Jessica Miller: Yeah
[00:31:09]
Dr. Meghan Garcia-Webb: And I like I know like but I don’t know what those have to do with each other, right? But it’s such an easy Yeah, our brain doesn’t want to exercise right?
[00:31:20] Like there’s a big part of our brain that like really is not interested in that at all It’s like of course, it’s cold Right now Right, but I’m just like well No one said you had to go outside. Right. Right? But if you do want to go outside, you just, like, do you have a coat? Kind of a lot. Do you have boots?
[00:31:39] Like, maybe you have to dress like you’re going skiing.
[00:31:42]
Jessica Miller: Mm hmm. You
[00:31:42]
Dr. Meghan Garcia-Webb: know? Sometimes that happens. But, again, the choice is yours.
[00:31:48]
Jessica Miller: Absolutely. Absolutely. No, I love this. So, so, so much. Um, and I think again, it’s like those small things, I think you said it in the beginning. It’s you don’t need to overhaul [00:32:00] your life to actually make a big change.
[00:32:02] And I think when we look at weight and health holistically, there are certain interventions that we can do that make a big. difference in the overall outcome and making sure that we are working with somebody who knows what those levers are and also knows it in a nuanced way for us, I think is the key.
[00:32:22] Um, I love the idea of personalized medicine. Um, I, you know, I’m a high touch coach. I think that intervention is always better, so I’m a bit biased, but from a results perspective, I think it really matters because to your point, people take on a lot of stuff that doesn’t actually create the results. In some ways, it could hurt them because it’s actually their physical body, um, or they just make no progress and they suffer and they think that that’s just how it has to be, which I think is really, you know, equally as bad.
[00:32:51] Yeah.
[00:32:52]
Dr. Meghan Garcia-Webb: Yeah, I agree. So it, and I really love doing this kind of like really. Intense targeted [00:33:00] focused time with people and then I want them to graduate.
[00:33:03]
Jessica Miller: Yeah, you know I don’t
[00:33:04]
Dr. Meghan Garcia-Webb: want this to be something where they’re meeting with me for years and you totally fine if they want to but that’s not the Point the point is like you get in we find out like really what’s going on.
[00:33:15] And I think that’s where You know, and I, and I work with people outside Massachusetts as well as a coach. And I think that’s where, even though I can’t be their doctor, we’re having a coach who is a doctor who works in with weight patients all the time is very helpful because there’s literally no pattern I haven’t seen.
[00:33:35] Like it’s very easy for me to find the reasons why. People are just so confused and it’s like they come to you with this big tangle of knots, you know And it’s just like I know where to look I’ve been doing this for so long And that’s where I feel like the this new evolution of my work is so satisfying because I can actually you know get in there and help people in a [00:34:00] really In a much faster way, um, and it doesn’t have to take, you know, years and years and years.
[00:34:06] So.
[00:34:07]
Jessica Miller: Yeah. I love that. This is like the power of a powerful niche and an offer because you become really specialized and I think time is a really, really valuable resource for people. So when they can work with somebody who’s going to help them get there quicker, that to me is gold just as much as the result of whatever it is that they’re.
[00:34:26] Wanting maybe like with the scale or you know, whatever, um, I was going to also ask, you know, now that you’ve been doing this work and you, um, have been running your business, where are you seeing that next opportunity for you? What are you being drawn to? Like if, as you grow or as you think, what’s exciting you as either something you might add on to your offers or do in the future?
[00:34:48] And of course we’re not going to hold you to it, but just like dreaming and scheming.
[00:34:52]
Dr. Meghan Garcia-Webb: Yeah. Oh, that is so, it’s such a good question. Um, I just love, I, I’m doing [00:35:00] more, you know, in Massachusetts, but also like expanding, probably the next step is really expanding the coaching aspect of it, because I do feel like, um, 90 percent of what people are Grappling with is mindset.
[00:35:16] And so I really like being able to offer that, you know, if I’m working with somebody and they say, Oh, like my sister wants to work with you, but she lives in California, right? Like we can still do a lot of the really intense work. Um, just without the medical aspect of it. So, um, that’s probably the next.
[00:35:35] Iteration. Um, and then I’m always, you know, expanding the, uh, YouTube channel as well because I love being a source of, you know, evidence based, um, information for people.
[00:35:49]
